​Grant application FAQs


1. How much funding can I apply for?

This depends on the grant round you are applying in. Please refer to the relevant round below to determine the funding range:

2. Will all applications receive funding?
No – The application process is very competitive. Applications will be assessed on merit against all other applications.

3. Will an application receive all funding requested?
Not necessarily, partial funding may be offered. If partial funding is offered, organisations are encouraged to obtain the balance of funds from other sources. If this is not possible, an organisation will need to assess whether the project remains viable or whether a formal request for modification needs to be submitted to the Liquor & Gaming NSW Grants Team for consideration.

​4. Can funding be sought for a project that has already commenced?
No – applications must be for new projects that will:

  • commence in July for the grants round that opens at the start of the calendar year
  • commence in January for the grants round that opens in the middle of the calendar year.

​​5. Where can I get an application form?
Application forms are available online. You can access the online form via the Liquor & Gaming NSW Grants webpage here.

6. Can I apply for funding if my project is located outside NSW?
No. Only projects located in NSW are eligible to apply.

7. Does my organisation need to be registered for GST?
It is recommended that your organisation be registered for GST. The amounts of funding provided may have GST threshold implications to your annual turnover. If you are unsure about the tax implications relating to GST and grant funding, please visit the Australian Tax Office website for more information.​

8. What communities do the assessors consider as disadvantaged under the priority framework?
Assessors are encouraged to consider the Australian Bureau of Statistics' definition of socioeconomic advantage and disadvantage in terms of people's access to material and social resources and their ability to participate in society. The Index of Relative Social Disadvantage (SEIFA Index) provides a summary of variables indicating comparative disadvantage by ranking areas on a continuum from most disadvantaged to least disadvantaged. 9. How are regional and remote communities defined under the priority framework?
For the purposes of this funding round, regional and remote communities are based on ARIA classifications (Accessibility Remoteness Index of Australia). The ARIA is used to give applications from regional and rural communities a weighting that realigns their competitive chances in the context of larger metropolitan and peri-urban locations.

10. My project is located within the Sydney metropolitan area. Is my project eligible to apply?
Yes. Projects that respond to a gap in the provision of facilities and engage disadvantaged communities in metropolitan Sydney or regional and remote NSW will be highly regarded. All projects are subject to eligibility and assessment criteria. 

11. Do I have to apply for planning approval before submitting an application for funding?
No, however, you should have commenced discussions with your local council and be ready to lodge your development application. Release of the grant funds will be conditional on the Development Consent being secured and the Funding Deed being executed.

If you have not secured the necessary Development Consent within an appropriate timeframe, the grant offer may be withdrawn.​

The stage your project is at in regard to any required development consent contributes to your "project readiness."

12. What authorisation should I obtain from the land or property owner/s?
You are responsible for obtaining approval for the proposed project from the appropriate land or property owner/s.

You should indicate whether you have secured approval from the land or property owner as part of your application. If not yet secured at the time of application, the relevant discussions/approvals should have commenced before submitting your application.

If your project is successful, the release of grant funds will depend on evidence of the land or property owner's consent if applicable for the approved project.

13. Can I submit an application which is for a project that is a component or stage within a larger project?
Yes – providing the work on the project component or stage is a new project proposal/application that does not commence prior to the completion of the grant round.

14. Can I confirm that my project has been submitted?
Yes - Once you have completed an online application you will be asked to review and submit it. Your application is not officially submitted for consideration until you have reviewed it, corrected any errors and clicked on the submit button.

Once you click the submit button you will receive a confirmation email which will also contain a PDF copy of your application. Check to ensure that you have received this email and please retain it as a record of your application. If you do not receive this email you can login to the online system, click on 'My Submissions' to view all submitted and unsubmitted applications.

15. Can a Local Council proposal be for activities over more than one site?
Yes – provided that they are within the one local government area and are for the same type of works. This would be considered one application and be subject to the maximum amount of funding available per application. Council applications will compete with all other applications for the available funding within the relevant area.

16. Do we need to provide quotes for the project?
The budget expenditure section in the application asks for costs to be​ itemised as quoted or estimated. It is preferred that costs are quoted to substantiate the funding requested. Quotes should align with and substantiate information provided in the project budget.

The project budget should be presented by major line items and in enough detail for assessors to consider it within the competitive assessment process.

17. Can value-in-kind be considered as funding contributed by a not-for-profit organisation?
Yes – voluntary labour and donated materials are allowed as part of the not-for-profit organisation's contribution to the cost of a project. Voluntary labour and donated materials including estimated value should be provided in the project budget.

18. What is the process after applications close?
After the application period has closed, all applications undergo the steps outlined on the Assessment Process page.

19. Will late applications be accepted?
No – The online system will not accept applications submitted after the advertised closing date. If you are having problems submitting your application you should contact the Grants Team on (02) 9995 0992 well in advance of the closing date and in time to seek assistance.

20. What assistance can Liquor & Gaming NSW staff provide?
Liquor & Gaming NSW staff are available to provide advice to applicants on interpreting grants program information and to provide advice on the types of activities that are relevant to each of the funding categories. However, staff are not able to talk through the details of an application or to provide advice that may be perceived as providing an unfair advantage to one applicant over another.
