Responsible Service of Alcohol training course

You must complete the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training course if you sell or supply alcohol in NSW.

This includes:

  • club secretaries
  • club directors (if they serve alcohol)
  • licensees
  • managers
  • service staff
  • RSA marshals
  • security staff.

RSA training also applies to:

  • promotional staff
  • volunteers.

Once you successfully complete the RSA course, you receive a statement of attainment and an interim certificate. You can then apply for a photo competency card which is valid for five years from the first course completion date in any competency.

You can complete the first-time course in a classroom or online through one of these Registered Training Organisations (RTO). Only an approved RTO can conduct RSA course training and issue certificates.

Course materials

The RSA course is part of an effort to control the negative impacts alcohol has on our community. Your course trainer will give you the course material.

The RSA Student Course Notes (PDF, 7.3MB) was updated on 1 July 2015 to include changes to liquor laws.

RTOs have until 4 September 2015 to update their hard-copy materials with the new course content.

The course will cover these 4 elements:

  • the context of RSA in NSW
  • legislative framework for RSA
  • impact of alcohol
  • preventing intoxication and underage drinking.

How much does it cost?

The price of the first-time course varies between different training organisations. The amount paid includes the cost of the competency card.

Refresher training

To renew your photo competency card for a further five years you must complete the Liquor & Gaming NSW renewal process. The cost for renewals is $35.
